Anyone out there remember “hanging chads”? It is very interesting to observe that this spectacularly ill-designed ballot paper is causing serious headaches in deciphering the electorate’s intentions. I have always thought that the standard ballot paper could benefit from the application of some good old Information Design thinking. Whomever is responsible for this two-column version is falling well short of the mark (and never studied the literature on Bush/Gore).

The most important thing to remember is that this is not a brand identity but a corporate identity. Meaning that it doesn’t need to have that sex appeal that attracts millions of viewers each night but one that looks like it will take no shit when printed on a business card and handed out by people with power suits more expensive than the computer you are reading this on.
If you were ever unclear as to the difference between a brand identity and a corporate identity, I think that underconsideration.com have fairly nailed it in today’s post about the new NBCUniversal identity system. (Shame about the Copperface though.)

The Starbucks brand mark gets evolved and simplified.

I would love to see a frame-by-frame comparison of this corporate video with the oh-so similar Jonny Ive/Steve Jobs videos which Apple have used to promote their product launches in the last few years.
